For this week's blog, answer the following question in at least 6 complete, edited sentences.
If you could give a piece of advice to any character in your story which character would you pick, what would the advice be, and why would you give this piece of advice? Be sure to show me that you've read the book with details about what's been happening that would make you want to advise this character.

If I could give advice to the character Seth Sorenson. The advice would be to not go to places or do things you are not supposed to do. I would give this advice to Seth because he always tries to go places that his sister, Kendra gets to go to. The places that Kendra go to are places like Wyrmroost- a dragon sanctuary, and The Lost Mesa- A secret preserve like Fablehaven. They are dangerous because they have some dangerous demons and monsters in them that want to be freed from their imprisonments. In my book the main characters- Seth and Kendra Sorenson, are trying to collect keys from secret preserves like Fablehaven, The Lost Mesa, The Obsidian Waste, and Wyrmroost. They are collecting the keys so the antagonists in the book (the Society of the Evening Star) cannot open the demon prison Zzyx.
ReplyDeleteFirst sentence is a fragment.
DeleteWhy can't Seth do what his sister does? How else can he get the keys?
The book that I am reading is called The Martian by Andy Weir. It is about an astronaut named Mark Watney who gets stranded alone in Mars. If I could give Mark Watney any advice it would be to hold on and don't give up. To stay strong. Work hard and you will make it back to Earth. I would give this advice because in the book right now he is starting to give up on things. His Martian potatoes get wrecked, and he doesn't even try to rebuild them. This is important because he is also starting to run out of food, and growing more potatoes would definitely solve that problem. He has also given up on the rover, which is kind of like a space car. He won't try to go to Ares 4, which is where the rest of his crew will land when they come back. He needs to stop giving up on things because he will survive longer if he does all of these things. That's why I would give him that advice.

Nice job including details of what's happening in the book so we know why your advice is good!
DeleteThe book I'm reading is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. It is about how a little girl named Lucy and her siblings Peter, Susan, and Edmund enter a different place in a wardrobe. But at the beginning, Lucy was the one who discoverd it and told her brothers and sister but they never believed. So one night Lucy went to go see a friend that she met in Narnia. Then Edmund followed her and met the evil queen also known as the Queen of Narnia (not true to some people in the story) and there is no "daughter/son of eve" allowed in Narnia and if they enter everyone should kidnap them. So Edmund told the evil queen about all his sisters and brother and the queen told him to bring them and caused trouble. I would give advice to Edmund to not trust anyone and to not tell anything to anybody. I would give this piece of advice to Edmund because he caused trouble at the beginning but even more trouble in the middle of the story.
ReplyDeleteDoes Edward know the rule? Why would he attempt to break it?
DeleteOne scene where Harry could use some advice is after he has a dream about attacking Arthur Weasley. Arthur has been on guard at the house where the members of the Order of the Phoenix stay. In the dream Harry is a snake and he slithers up to Arthur and bites him. In real life Harry would never do this, and when it actually happens, Harry is worried. He didn't want to actually hurt his friend's dad. However, somehow he is connected to Lord Voldemort and so was seeing through his snake's eyes (snake's perspective.). Harry could use advice here because he thinks he is really possessed by Voldemort. If I could give Harry advice at this point, I'd tell him to chill out. He should go to Ginny, who had been possessed by Voldemort before, and get some advice because she knows how being possessed feels. Lastly I might suggest that he think about the spells Dumbledore put around Hogwarts because then he would realize that bad guys can't get in. He would then realize he couldn't been the one who attacked Arthur.

ReplyDeleteI would give a piece of advice for the girl named Rose in the book Rain Reign. I would give her an advice of trying not to shout out, try to behave, not follow the rules all the time, and not talk about homophones all the time. I would give her this advice because sometimes we don't need to follow the rules, but Rose shouts out when people don't follow the rules. One example, is when she was on her bus, and she always shouted out when her bus driver wasn't following the rules when she was driving, so they kicked her out of the bus. When kids didn't put things away she shouted, and a LOT more. She always talks about homophones that's why no one wants to talk or sit with her.
Do you realize that maybe Rose isn't a "typical" kid and has some problems? What could the other kids do to help Rose?
DeleteMaybe they could try to understand her?
DeleteThe book I am reading is the book Brian's Return by Gary Paulsen. The advice I would give is to the character Brian. The advice I would give him is to bring a more heavy gear tent. The reason I would tell him this is because in the book in chapter 13 Brian was sleeping when a storm hit. Brian is in his tent and hears the rain outside. The wind is blowing very hard outside and Brian is thinking something bad is going to happen and something does. Brian's tent completely collapses and he goes with it. He rolls down the land and into the water with his tent on him so Brian has to get out of the tent which he does but the point is that if Brian brought a more heavy duty tent this never would have happened. In conclusion, I think Brian should have brought a better tent and none of this would have happened.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think he didn't think of this? Did he put the tent back up?
DeleteIf I could give advice to a character in my story, When you Reach me, by Rebecca stead, I would give it to Miranda. I would tell her to stay calm and be kind to sal (if she wants to be friends with her again) and to stay away from the “laughing man.” I haven't finished the book but I don't think he is a good person. Also don't cause any trouble between the Laughing Man and Sal. Also, to stay away from rude people like Jimmy (because he is racist) also, Miranda doesn't like him that much. I would give her advice because she going through a lot, her not being friends with Sal, the Laughing Man, and even Jimmy. Although her mom is going on a gameshow to win $20,000 so that's pretty lucky for her, if she wins, that is.
ReplyDeleteCapital letters!
DeleteExplain what the Laughing Man has been doing to make you think he might be bad.
I need more details about what is happening in the book to understand your advice.
I am currently reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If I could give advice to anyone in the book it would be Ford Prefix. The advice I would give him would don't be creepy. I would give him this advice because in the book he is telling his friend Arthur Dent that the earth is going to be demolished for a galactic freeway. That's not the creepy part the creepy part is that he is standing in a dark alley. The book doesn't even explain why he's in the alley. I would say don't be hidden or people might think you are doing bad things.
ReplyDeleteDoes Arthur think he is being creepy because of the alley? Is Ford trying to be secretive?
DeleteIf I was to give a pice of advice to a character in the book I am reading,I would give it to Abigail Rook. I pick this character because she needs a job but she doesn't know how to get the job from someone she needs to ask it from. The piece of advice would be to always first observe something before doing anything about it and always act calm no matter what the thing is and don't ever forget to ask questions about if you know a person that can know about or would know about it because that is what a detective does. So like when a murder happened and there is this man who acts to know about someone who would know about it so she dud a nice job by observing the place firs before touching anything but what she did wrong was scream when she she a dead body. And that kind of proves to Jackaby this she can't handle this. But she did a nice job investigating the man that she knew knew what happened and she is almost there in a place of being a detective and I wish her good luck.
ReplyDeleteGood advice. Be careful of sentences that are too long or sound just like how you talk. Re-read and make sure they aren't too informal and have the right words.
DeleteIf I could give a piece of advice to any character in my story I would pick Tris. The advice I would give to Tris would be to get her head in the game. I would give this piece of advice to Tris because the part that I am reading is about the first stage of training, and so far Tris is doing very bad. In the book it says "Something slams into my side and I scream ...". It's important that Tris gets her head in the game because if she doesn't pass the first stage of training she will become faction less. Faction means a small organized group within a larger group.
ReplyDeleteIs it that her head is not in the game or she hasn't learned HOW to truly compete yet?
DeleteIf I could give advice to anyone in my book it would be the main charters Eli.The advice I give him is range is not the answer. I say this because after his farther locked his family but not his brother in the compound a fallout shelter for nuclear warfare if it ever happened. His brother never came and he never helped him make it so he thought the whole time he was locked in the compound (2000 days) he killed his brother (not on purpose) .Another reason is he did kinda kill his farther .Fire burning him in the compound saying,"maybe it made me evil, but I was glad my farther was gone".My advice would of help and maybe he could of asked him why he did lock him in the compound.Know do you believe why I would give this advice to Eli.
ReplyDeleteSo far I love the book I am rating it a 4 because it got right to the point not giving some sad flash back and I can tell I am going to love the plot.
Will - your responses always show you are really THINKING about your books, but the grammar really needs work. Keep reading out loud to make sure you are clear.
DeleteI am reading "The Zodiac Legacy Convergence," by Stan Lee. It is about a boy named Steve who is taking a trip to China to learn more about his heritage. When he was at a museum, he heard screams from a staff only door. Instinctively, Steve went through the door, down a staircase to an enormous room. In this room Steve meets the antagonist, Maxwell and he also meets two other protagonists named Jasmine and Carlos. In the room there is a shipan or a zodiac calendar on the ceiling. On the ground there are pools. Every 100 years the shipan gives its power to 12 people one for each zodiac sign. Maxwell was trying to steal all of the zodiac powers so he could take over the world. Jasmine throws a grenade at the shipan which cracks it and it lads on maxwell. After that Steve gets the power of the tiger and they escape. Steve doesn't know to trust Jasmine but Carlos notices that the zodiac power was spreading through the clouds and it might affect people around the world. So now the goal for the protagonists is to gather all of the people who were affected and defeat maxwell. I would tell Steve to trust his instinct because he keeps on being unsure about his choices. (This book is so intriguing that I started it yesterday and I am already on part 2)
ReplyDeleteHas Steve been right before? Expand a bit on why Steve needs this advice. Great summary.

ReplyDeleteThe book I'm reading is Brothers and Sisters by Dan Smith. The book is about Karl training for Hitlers army. The advise I would give him is not going or joining Hitlers army because they do bad stuff. The only reason Karl is doing it is because his dad died in war and wants to get revenge on the enemy. I would give this advise because nothing will bring you dad back especially if your trying to get revenge. That's why I would give that piece of advice.
ReplyDeleteNice advice. I like how you expand on your idea. It's not only that this army does bad things, but that once someone has died, fighting won't bring them back.
DeleteTry to give a bit more detail to summarize - where is Karl? What part of the training is he in? Is he conflicted at all?
The book that I'm reading is After by Francine Prose. It is about a school that Tom, the main character, goes to. At a school nearby Tom's, there was a shooting where three students shot 14 students and teachers. Then a new student counselor came to Tom's school and started setting up metal detectors at the school entrance and making up rules like no wearing the color red, no more buying lunch, and everyone on a sports team has to take a urine test. Students and teachers are disappearing or being sent to a survival camp in a desert and they never come back. If I could give a piece of advice to a character in this book, I'd choose Brian, the only one left of Tom's three best friends. I would tell him to always look out for himself and his friends, because no one knows what is going to happen to them. I would tell him this because if he makes one small mistake, he would be sent to places where he will never be able to see his family again.
ReplyDeleteGood summary. How will Brian look out for himself and his friends? What exactly should he do?
DeleteThe book that I am reading is called Curveball The Year I Lost My Grip written by Jordan Sonneblick. It is about an 9th grader named Peter Friedman who gets injured in a pitching accident. Peter’s elbow was rendered useless, and the doctor informed him that he would never pitch a ball again. Peter's accidents ends All-Star pitcher from retrieving his dreams. If I could give Peter Friedman any advice it would be to become honest to yourself and accept the struggles in your new world. I would give this advice to Pete because ever since he had his accident he thinks it's a priority to be friends with the golden boy AJ Moore;best pitcher in the league. Peter Friedman is a freshman in highschool and he notices the struggles of striving to bring everything back to normal but in reality he won't be able to.Peter’s grandfather had been a photographer for what seemed like forever. He captured numerous weddings, sporting events, and of course, Peter’s youth. Peter learned everything about photography from his grandfather and was hoping to learn more. This is why I would give this advice to Peter Friedman.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck does his grandfather's photography have to do with Peter's arm and baseball career? I'm very confused.
DeleteThe book I will be writing about is called The bad Idea.In this book there is a kid who's biggest dream is to win the finals in a basketball team,so he goes to try outs in school and he makes it in.Through out the story he is the best he shots 12 baskets each game minimum.Until they get to the finals but he gets sick so he will not be allowed to play.He tells his dad to go to the game and call him as many times as possible. While his dad is watching the game he is writing a song, and making a big poster for his team. When he figures that they lost he gets really upset and rips the poster and the song. Also he refuses his dream of wining the finals on a basketball team.My advice for him is just because he lost once does not mean he will always loose.Maybe he can sign up next year and actually win,so he should not give up his dream for just one loss. Daniela
ReplyDeleteCapitalize "Bad" in the title.
Deletewho's vs whose
Your ideas are good but your grammar is not. You need to slowly re-read your writing out loud. Read one sentence at a time.
The book that I'm reading is called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is about a girl named Katniss who is competing in a tribute which is in a nationally televised event called the Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games they have to choose a boy and a girl to fight to death.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion my advice to Katniss would be to not give up and to be friendly to Peeta. This would be my advice because Peeta wants to kill Katniss to win. In my opinion Katniss should be friendly to Peeta because then Peeta won't notice that Katniss wants to kill him to win the Hunger Games. Also she should not give up because If she is not confident in herself she might be killed. That's why I would give her that advice.
So is she pretending to be nice or really being nice? Is this selfish or necessary to survive? Think about it.
DeleteThe book I'm reading is The Big Field by Mike Lupica. It is about a 13 year old kid named Hutch that loves the sport baseball, but he is always down on his self. If I could give him advice it would be not to put your self down. If you ignore the negatives and take in the positives you will bring your self up. I would give this advice because in the book Hutch and his team are all picking a team captain. Everyone on the team except there top player Daryle wanted Hutch as team captain. So Hutch said" I shouldn't be the team captain, Daryle is the best." Then they said" No you should be captain!" Daryle walked away to his house with his head down. Hutch had his head down too because he felt bad for Daryle. That is why I would give Hutch this advice.
ReplyDeleteYourself is one word.

So what should Hutch have done? Accepted the nomination?
The Princess Dairies- It is about a girl named, Mia (Amelia) that doesn't know that she is a princess of Genovia. Until, he perants tell her and explain everything to her that her dad is a prince of Genovia; that means that she is going to be the next ruler of Genovia, but she doesn't know how to act like a proper princess. After they show her how to act a bit proper she gest a date to go to The Culture Diversity dance, but she doesn't know that Josh, her date actully likes because she is a princess or because of her personality. My advice would be to test him by saying that your not going to be a princess anymore and then see what he say and by what he say define if he actully likes you.
ReplyDeleteEmely Montoya Ixcatcoy
fragments - read this: Until, he perants tell her and explain everything to her that her dad is prince of Genovia.
DeleteSeems like OK advice, but why would Josh buy it?
I am reading a book called Devastation by Gloria Skurzinsky. If I could give a piece of advice to any character in the story, I would advise Corgan. I would tell him to loosen up a little more. I would tell him this because all the time, he keeps being really hesitant to do things that involve risk. He doesn't allow a lot of time for fun things that could be risky, and I think Sharla would be more comfortable around him. If he stopped being so strict, he would probably be a lot happier and have a lot more fun.
ReplyDelete"All the time" and "do things" are not specific enough. Give examples of times and things that he does which show hesitation.
DeleteWhile reading the book Middle School My Brother is a Big Fat Lair by James Patterson I realized that the advice I'd give to the protagonist is to speak up and to realize that she won't be like her brother. The reason I say this I give her this advice is because in the beginning of the story she is going to six grade her brother is going to seventh grade. When her brother was in six grade he was a troublemaker. Her Brother also got kicked out of school before he could break before all the rules. Since she has the same last name as your brother all of her teachers assume that she is also a troublemaker like your brother. Her first day of middle school hasn't started the way she wanted. Will her teachers see that she's not a troublemaker like your brother? Will middle school get any better for her? Who knows what will happen next.
ReplyDeleteRe-read your entry for mistakes. You say "your" brother, but he is HER brother.
DeleteIf she speaks up, what might happen?
The book that I am reading is called The Fill-in Boyfriend by Kasie West. It is about a girl named Gia who gets dumped the parking lot. Advice that I would give to Gia is to tell the truth. I would give her this advice because she has been bragging to her best friends about a boyfriend who's name is Bradley for about two months, but her friends think that she is lying. Now her boyfriend is going to meet her best friends and to show them that she is telling the truth. Right before they were entering to her High School Prom her boyfriend breaks up with her in the parking lot, and she does know what to do. She thinks that when she tells her friends that he broke up with her her friends are going to think that she lied and are going to hate her, but I think she should tell the truth. She saw a boy in a car reading, and she thinks that he could pretend to be her "boyfriend." She walks straight to the car and starts talking, and she ask why are you here he says that he is new here and that he is waiting for his sister who goes to Gia's school. She asked if he could be her "boyfriend" for a while and then he says no, but she gives him reason and starts talking more. At last he says yes and goes home to change. I think that was a wrong decision that Gia made because she is just walking up to a stranger that she doesn't even know. When he comes back they walk in but, before they walk in she says who he is going to be and tells him a little bit about him. They finally walk in he sees his sister dancing and he says to Gia, "We are ok." Gia sees her friends and starts walking up to them and starts talking to them about him. I think she should of tell the truth because she will get into another lie and hurt her friends more. It was a wrong decision just walking up to the stranger asking them that. I would of not done it. This is why I would give her this advice.
ReplyDeleteWould OF is not a phrase - it's would HAVE.
DeleteRe-read before you post. Read out loud to hear your grammar mistakes.
Good summary and advice.
My advice would be to Gary Palsen, it would be about him rethinking going on the frozen thousand mile trek.
ReplyDeleteHuh? What book are you talking about? You need to summarize what has been happening. Where is he going and why? Why do you think he should not go?
ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is called The Making of a Navy Seal. There is a guy named Brandon Webb who taught the most toughest and most famous warriors alive. He does teach millions of other soldiers as an military instructor and some do become the best of the best like Chris Kyle and Marcus Lutrell. My advice is to train everyone the way you did to them so you make a lot more Warriors then soldiers.
ReplyDelete"most toughest" is redundant - it's either most tough or toughest (not both)
DeleteWhat is the difference between a Warrior and a soldier?
Why wouldn't he train them all the same way?
Needs more detail.
I'm reading Big Blue it is harder than a book about a mermaid princess would seem. If I could give the main character any piece of advice I would tell her to try to work things out with her mother. Her mother is always so hard on her. I can see why the main character gets so mad at her. The mother is always correcting every single thing she does and says. It makes her not want to be herself. Although the mother is mean it would be so much better if they worked it out before it gets serious.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the title - or maybe it's your first sentence?
DeleteGive some examples of how the mother is mean and WHY taking your advice might help in a SPECIFIC situation.
I'm reading a book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio. In this book, the main character, August, gets made fun of because of his face. If I could give him advice, I would tell him to not care because that's what they want - they only want to see you be hurt, so if you ignore it and smile, they'll eventually leave you alone. I would tell this to August because it would help him & it's very useful advice.
ReplyDeleteEach week the blog should focus on the just the pages you've read - not the whole book. You've told me the same thing in almost very blog, which does not show you are reading the book because it is not specific to any section.
DeleteThe book I am reading is called "who's done it". If I could give a character advice it would be pay attention to life. The world has little clues you find them and you have struck gold my friend. I would say this to all of the characters because you can solve all mysteries when you pay attention. The advice Is important to the world your world. I think the world would be a lot better. That's what I would gave as advice to the characters in my book.
ReplyDeleteCapitalize book titles.
DeleteThis needs a summary of what is going on in the book. What is the mystery? Why are they looking for clues? I can't understand your advice if I don't see how it will apply to what is going on in the book.
Spoiler Alert for people who haven't read DWK: Old School. I could give advice to Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. I would say that when his mom asked him to help clean the park while he was trying to sell water, he should say that he was trying to help the people cleaning the park by giving them water while they are working. By giving them water it will help them get water for when they were dehydrated. Also, they would work better after drinking some cold refreshing water. Not to mention all the money he would earn. Also, when the Girl Scouts came to help out cleaning the park, they made it seem like the other people were being trapped. The Girl Scouts prevented them from leaving for some reason. I'd tell him to ask to his mom about why he can't leave.
ReplyDeleteWAS he actually trying to help the people or was he trying to make money? Are you suggesting he lie? I don't understand because you don't give a good summary of what is happening.
DeleteIf you could give a piece of advice to any character in your story which character would you pick, what would the advice be, and why would you give this piece of advice? Be sure to show me that you've read the book with details about what's been happening that would make you want to advise this character.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading the book Matched by Allie Condie. If I could give advice to any character it would be Cassia. I would advise her to not try to be super brave, since she joined a rebel group against the society. I think that if she's brave and she gets in trouble she could get in bigger trouble than she would've before. If she gets in big trouble than she will be sent right back to the camp, possibly to die. And her life seems to be good right now. Since she's with Ky, and will most likely see Xander, she hopefully wont be sent away.
- Don't start sentences w/ "And..."
ReplyDelete- wont needs to be won't
