Choose one (or 2) sentence/line/quote from this week's reading that jumped out at you as being really important to the story, its themes, its plot, characters etc...
Copy the sentence and explain why it's so important to the story.  What made you choose THIS one sentence?
Use at least 6 sentences (in addition to the sentence from the story).

  1. 2 sentences from the book that stood out to me is “it's all about changing what's handed to you, about poking around a little, lifting the corners.” it's important because she's saying how after Adam died, he taught her a lesson, and she learned that sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. Another one is “he's dead isn't he? Said Hattie. He is, Hattie, said her dad” it's important because that's when Hattie starts understanding more and learns a lesson. But it also shows what her nana thinks about the situation. Also, that's when the book gets more into the past and history of when Adam and Hattie's mom were young.

    1. 2 sentences that stood out ARE not IS.
What does her nana think? I don't see how this quote shows anything about Nana.
Say more about lifting the corners - the lesson is more than that.

  2. One sentence that stood out to me was, "Did you know that sesame pods burst open when they're ripe, almost as if they can't wait to be eaten? You're just as impatient, Zardi, but you must learn caution." This quote stood out to me because it showed how impatient Zardi was. Later in the story there is a part when this little sesame seed is important. I chose this sentence because it shows what Zardi is like. She has no patience but eventually learns to have some. Having more patience helped her along in the story.

  3. I am now reading a new book Called Drama by Raina Telegamiar. 2 sentences that stood out to me is "I've known Greg since second grade. He's always a thickheaded, even if he is cute." The reason why it stood out to me is because it shows that the character is reveling himself and what he really thinks in the inside and how his personality is. The second one is "why don't you audition!? Fine! I will." This is important becasue it shows that she will do anything to encourage her friend to do something. Also that she does not care that she might fail at the audition because she did not practice.

    1. I don't follow the first sentence - who is speaking? Is it a boy? It sounds like it's a girl, in which case, it's revealing what SHE thinks about him.
      Last sentence is a fragment.

  4. I am reading sisters by Raina Telegamiar 1 sentence that stood out to me is When the mom said "we are in love lock Nevada." then Amara said "area code 666 I presume." This shows that, she thinks the place she is ,is so bad that it is hell for her. Or she is not happy or enjoying being there

    1. First sentence is a run on. After the author's last name you need a period.
Why do you randomly capitalize "When"?
Say more about WHY her lack of happiness in this situation is important to the book as a whole.

  5. The officer smiles with relief, as we leave the city limits " David Pelzer," he says, " your free"..." I'm free?" This part is important to the story because it shows that Dave is not going to be stuck with his mother his entire life! He's going to be normal without being starved or beaten up. People will respect him. Dave will be a kid that people will love him. His dream of being loved will come true. I chose this sentence because it shows he will be free and he will be protected from his mother.

    1. "Faction before blood. More than family, our factions are where we belong. Can that possibly be right?" This part is important to the story because it shows that Beatrice disagrees with the government and their moto. Which shows that she doesn't fit in with everyone else. I chose this sentence because it shows that Beatrice is starting to be herself.

    2. You can't start a sentence w/ "which shows." Put a comma after motto. "...and their motto, which shows..."
You are right and I know this is a great quote only because I've read the book. Be more detailed - the question asks for 6 sentences. Be "more" herself - what does this mean? Was she not herself before? What are factions?

I'm reading ghost rider by Michael fleshier 2 sentences that stood out to me is how he became the ghost rider and how he uses is power. He become ghost rider by one night he got robbed and beat up so when he was knocked out the Devel possess him to be the ghost rider which is a guy named Johnny blaze with a flaming fire skull on a fire bike he agrees to have the power. He uses his power to fight bad guys and stop criminals that was his agreement with Devel if he fights crime he gets to have the power. I chose theses sentences because it tells u how he got his power and how he uses his power. The themes are in New York

    1. Capitalize the title of your book and the author's last name. The first sentence is a run-on.
The sentences should be copied from teh book. Don't just say "when blah blah..." I want to know exactly which lines from the book stood out.
Good ideas, but you need to re-read before you submit and EDIT. Lots of run-ons.
What is the last sentence? New York might be a SETTING, but not a theme...

  7. 2 sentences that stood out to me are. The first sentence is "The shadow on the sundial can hardly be seen at noon." This is important to me because it said how to tell some time on the sundial. The second sentence is "Almost 2,000 years ago, on August 24,A.D 79, the seaside town of Pompeii (Pom-pay) was a typical Roman town." This is a sentence that stood out to me because it explained more about the setting. Those are my 2 sentences that stood out to me.

    1. The first sentence is a fragment.
Why do we care how to tell time on a sundial?
      Why is the setting important?
It feels like you kind of picked any two sentences. Did you understand the question?

  8. I chose a quote that said "The woman was outraged. "He's just a baby. Would you shoot a child?" The man's face was twisted in betrayal. "How do we know? How can we be sure of anything anymore?" " I chose this quote because it shows how the man (he doesn't have a name) feels about the situation now. It shows that he is desperate for survival and doesn't trust anyone anymore. The woman wants to protect the child, but the man wants to shoot it. This quote is important because after this fight, they never talk to each other again. When the baby shaped bomb blows up and kills the woman, the man never says a word and he just leaves, but it damaged his life and it distracts him from surviving throughout the book.

  9. One sentence that really caught my attention and is important to the book is,"you don't always get what you want".This sentence really caught my attention because it is true somethings are going wrong, and we want something better to happen but we can not get it,and it does not matter how much we want it.This sentence is important to the book because in the book the main characters parents get divorced. His mom leaves him with his dad,and leaves with her boyfriend. The truth is that his mom was a alcoholic so she got really sick and died.He wishes that he had his mom there to say sorry for all the bad things he said about her,but she left, but she was dead and he cried and cried day and night but she would never come back.Another sentence that caught my attention was, "Jeremy we are like new born birds we have to learn to fly, and we fall many times over and over and over but at last we learn".This caught my attention because it means that we can learn from our mistakes if we just try to make it better little by little we will make it right and perfect.

  10. "I wrapped my hands aruond my brothers throat and started to tighten them." "Die,monster, die." Danielle likes to be really scary because it's suppose to be scary. The plot is telling scary stories and scary people that are there. Danielle likes to bother Pete and he gets really onoied. Danielle's friend Addie is like a close friend to her and when ever he makes a joke or when she makes fun of Pete.

  11. In the book Space Case the one thing that really stands out to me is when this scientist who is called Mr.Holtz. He went outside in space without a spacesuit and he died of doing that. "Dash," Dad said gravely. "Are you saying you think Dr.Holtz was murdered?" "Yes", I told him. "That's exactly was I'm saying". This is really important because what if he was actually murdered. Why did someone do that? Was it on purpose? Perhaps this is a clue to something perhaps it's a mystery to find out! I choose this because it really weird that someone would do that when no one even saw that happening!

  12. "Daddy," Matilda said, "do you think you could buy me a book?" "A book" he said. "What d'you want a flaming book for?" These sentences are important to the book (Matilda) because Matilda knew she was smart and even if her dad wouldn't want her to learn anything she still would learn what she would want to learn.

  13. One sentence that stood out to me was, "Niles, I can't do this anymore; I'm not going to prank anymore, you win truce." This sentence stood out to me because in the beginning and middle of the book Mikes and Niles were enemies. When Miles gets in so much trouble that he has to stay in detention every morning Niles persuaded the principle to let him go. The sentence shows that Niles is actually not a bad guy. When Niles and Miles work together they prank.
I chose this sentence because it shows that Miles wants to be on Niles pranking team but doesn't want to admit it.

    1. Is that what it shows? Does he want to prank? The sentence seems to suggest he does NOT want to. Is he lying to trick Niles?

  14. Two sentences that really stand out to me are " I will become a better person. I will change who I am. Now toward the end of the book he is still a little bad but mostly a good student.

  15. The part of the book that is important is when Theo finds the expensive electronics in his locker."On the left side, leaning against the textbooks, were three slender objects The had never seen before. The slender objects were Linx 0-4 Tablets, the hottest and lightest personal computers." This is important in this book because later this goes as evidence against Theo. If Theo is guilty then it will ruin his reputation as a good kid. That is the most important quote in my book so far.

  16. One part from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that jumped out at me as being really important to the story is "Dear Mr.Potter, Further to our letter of approximately twenty-two minutes ago, the Ministry of Magic has revised its decision to destroy your wand forthwith. You may retain your wand until your disciplinary hearing on 12th August, at which time an official decision will be taken. Following discussions with the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the ministry has agreed that the question of your expulsion will also be decided at that time. You should therefore consider yourself suspended from school pending further inquiries. With best wishes, Yours sincerely, Mafalda Hophirk IMPROPER USE OF MAGIC OFFICE ministry of magic." This is important to the story because this was a letter from the Ministry of Magic saying that Harry used underaged wizardry (which he did) but when someone gets a letter like this they will get expelled from their wizarding school and their wands will be destroyed unless they go to the ministry and show evidence that they had to do it for protection. What made me choose this part was that it meant that Harry might get expelled from Hogwarts and his wand might be destroyed and Harry wouldn't be able to do what he loves and he would live a muggle(non magical person) life.

    1. Run-ons! Shorten your sentences and use punctuation.
Say more about how this will affect the rest of the story. He might be expelled, so how does he feel? What is he doing to help himself?

  17. One important quote from Never have I ever is, "For the first time in weeks, I relaxed. Emma was safe." This quote was very important to the plot. The author had me thinking that Lilli and Gabby were the ones who killed Sutton. When I read this quote I realized they hadn't. For now, Emma was safe, and it shocked me. The whole book was leading up to the trip they were on, and if Lilli or Gabby would make their move. And surprisingly, it all changed.

  18. They were behind a hill fighting the opponents. "Life's not easy Jack, but life can't last forever" Enrique says. This is an important sentence because this is a life lesson. This sentence teaches you everything can not be easy. You have to work for what you want. This helps Jack because later in the book he remembered this quote and used it as experience.
    thanks,
    Theo

  19. The book that I just finished reading is Al Capone Does My Homework by Gennifer Choldenko. One sentence that stood out to me, or really important was "But you were asleep, weren't you" Darby Trixle. The sentence stood out to me because Moose did fall asleep, but how did Darby know? At the end of the book Janet told Moose that the person who started the fire was Donny Caconi, but someone paid him to do it. The person who paid him was Darby Trixle because Darby wanted to be the associate warden which is Moose's dad's job. So he knew that Moose was asleep while he was telling Donny where to set the fire.

  20. I am reading the book Game by Walter Dean Myers. A sentence that stands out to me is "basketball is wonderful". This sentence stands out to me because I think that basketball has to do with the plot. It has to do with the theme because this mystery is about this kid that takes over Drew's basketball team as the leader. I chose this sentence because I think the main idea is to not take basketball for granted. That is why I chose that sentence.

    1. Who says it? Was it not obvious that basketball would be part of the plot? The sentences just seems rather obvious.

  21. I am reading the book NPCs. The most important sentence I found in the book was, "To him, it meant that, no matter how difficult an opponent might be, there was always a chance." That struck me as the most important sentence because Eric, the person remembering it, is an inexperienced adventurer who has to win a tournament for money to help the rest of his team. Him and his party (the people who he adventures with) have almost no chance of winning the tournament for money. Demons attack interrupting the event and leads to a massive battle. Thistle, Eric's friend, saves the mayor's children from demons resulting in the party getting gear and money. When fighting the difficult demons they tried and succeeded because they didn't give up hope. Even when Thistle was in a demon's stomach.

  22. One sentence that stood out to me in the book Revolution written by Debrah Wiles. Is when Martin Luther King Jr. said " Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around, turn me around, turn me around! Gonna keep on walking', keep on talkin', Marchin' up to Freedom Land!" This quote stood out to me is because that helped Sunny calm her self down when she was in the crisis that the white and the black people are having mini war. The reason why is because her uncle is black and he left her because the white people did accept him so he left her. So that impacted on Sunny that with Martin Luther King Jr. she will get her uncle back. And as the book has a solution and she get her uncle back, and Martin Luther King Jr. was her hero. So it shows that when you have faith anything can happen.

  23. The book I'm reading is called Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The sentence(s) that mean most to me is "his eyes are about an inch below where they should be on his face, almost halfway down his cheeks. They slant downward to an extreme angle, almost like diagonal slits that someone cut into his face, and the left one is noticeably lower than the right one. He doesn't have eyebrows or eyelashes. His nose is disproportionately big for his face, and kind of fleshy. His head is pinched in on the sides where the eyes should be, like someone used giant pliers and crushed the middle part of his face." I think this is important because these sentences describe how August looks like & this sentence shows good imagery. Even though there's no picture or drawing of August, I can already tell how he looks like.

  24. "When I am at the doctors I act like the retarded person they think I am. Melody." This quote from Out of My Mind is important in the story. This sentence shows that the main character is Melody because it says" I am. Melody". This sentence also shows that the story is in first person because it uses pronouns like I and me. The main character in this sentence seems like she's really smart because she knows what the doctors think of her and she pretends to be exactly who they think she is. This might be foreshadowing because maybe the doctors find out that she is faking and they start honking differently about her. This shows that Melody might have lots of problems with her brain because this sentence sounds like she has done this many times.

  25. In The Princess Bride Elisabeth is unexpectedly chosen to marry the emperor. "Moma explained to me later that that meant that I was chosen to be the emperor's bride!" This is important because this is where the conflict begins. Elisabeth's sister was supposed to marry the emperor. So this meant that their bond could break. It also meant Elisabeth couldn't be alone anymore. This was a challenge because Elisabeth liked to be alone in the woods.

  26. I am reading, The Princess Diaires. The line that really jumped out at me was, " I mean, Josh Richter HAD kissed me. JOSH RITCHER had just KISSED me.
Josh Ritched had just ME. Did I menetion that he'd just kissed me ON THE LIPS?"
The reason I thought this quote really jumped out at me was because it was Mia's crush just did what she always
dreamed about! But Mia never thought that her dream would come true! She never saw that coming because all Josh said to her was,
"Excuse me", so he could get to his locker. Plus that kid never talked to her it was so random that Josh would just kiss her in front of
the whole reports of Teen People! Mia also was suprised when Josh asked her out to the Cultural Diversity Dance even though Josh
already had a girlfriend named, Lana Weinberger which is Mia's biggest enemy. Well I wonder if Josh only wants to be Mia's boyfriend just because she is a princess?

  27. One sentence that stood out to me in The Fault In Our Stars was, “Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” This quote stood out to me because it showed how positive everything can be if you believe in yourself. This quote was also very important to the plot. Hazel and Augustus are two teenagers who find themselves in tragic changes throughout the story. They find a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, and they meet and fall in love at a cancer support group. The author of The Fault In Our Stars embraced a love story that is one of the best stories I’ve read so far.
